Edward's great grandparents and this charcoal drawing is a good picture of them according to Edward's mother who remembered this couple from her childhood. When her family returned to Ontario when she was six weeks old they lived at their home for a short time. Again Edward had this picture restored. The scanner did a fair job only as the backing is very stiff and it is a large picture.

A brief look at 2017

I have not posted much in 2017 for various reasons.

I am stepping down as Editor of The Ottawa Genealogist (Journal of the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society) and as Treasurer of the Branch.

Elizabeth and I were co-treasurers for the 2017 Conference for the Ontario Genealogical Society which was held in Ottawa the second weekend in June.  That particular job occupied an enormous amount of our time in 2017.  The job did not end with Conference as there were bills to pay and the books to reconcile.  It was early November before we officially closed the books.

Hopefully I will now have more free time to work on my family lines.

We had been planning through the winter and spring for the Folkins Family Reunion in Sussex, New Brunswick.  Ed’s 2x great grandmother was Margaret Folkins and this family has had a continuous reunion for more than 70 years.  We attended back in 1993 and decided this would be the year to go once again. We took our time driving there stopping to see Grandby Zoo just south of Montreal the first day and then processing across Quebec into New Brunswick taking a couple of days and finally arriving at Sussex in time for the Reunion.  The first day was a bus tour of the area which included actually being on the Farm land where the Folkins family had come just after the Revolution in the United States.  They were United Empire Loyalists.  More than 200 people attended the Reunion and I enjoyed meeting many of my cousins.

Being in the Maritime Provinces we took the time to visit family on P.E.I.  Leaving Sussex we traveled to Parlee Beach.  Always an interesting adventure as I am also descended from the Parlee family (John Casey Parlee married Margaret Folkins).  We visited two of the lighthouses on Prince Edward Island, Point Prim and  Wood Islands, plus a tour of Fanningbank, home of the Lieutenant Governor, and All Souls’ Chapel. We have visited Prince Edward Island a number of times in the past so have seen a good deal of the Island already.

We headed home stopping at Riviere du Loup where we had a whale watching tour the next day.  The day was, unfortunately, cool and foggy but we did see some whales.  It was interesting just traveling up and down the St Lawrence River.  We had never done that before.  Home again and our trip had been for 12 days but we managed it very well.

A few weeks of rest and we were off again to southwestern Ontario this time to visit with my cousins in Woodstock and Brantford and to attend the annual Schultz-Kipp Reunion (Ed’s grandmother was Ida Wilhelmina (Schultz) Kipp whose parents Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Schultz and Wilhemine Fredericka Johanna Niemann who had emigrated to Canada from Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Fredericka in 1850 and Wilhelm in 1866).  All of the people at the Reunion are double second cousins or greater because Ida married William Henry Kipp and her brother Charles married the daughter of a brother of William Henry Kipp (Alfred).  This Reunion dates back 49 years although we have only attended the last nine years.  A bench was installed in the park at Princeton to commemorate the reunion. Plaque: Donated by Schultz-Kipp Reunion 49 Years 2017.

In 2018 we will have a week in Florida going to Disney World.  In the summer there is a reunion of the Rathbun family on Block Island (off the coast of Rhode Island).  Once again we will try to attend. Ed’s great grandmother was Mercy Ann (Rathbun) Link.  His 4x great grandfather William Rathbun, by family lore, was said to have an itchy foot which took him to southwestern Ontario in the 1830s.  It must have stopped itching though as he stayed on in the Oxford/Brant area for the rest of his life!

By 1862 they had moved to Blenheim Twp, Oxford County at Falkland, Ontario. The 1871 Census indicates that John was born in Lower Canada (Quebec), and was a weaver. He was of German descent and was unable to read or write. He was Methodist. Buried Christian Church Cemetery, Falkland, Ontario (no stone).

David Hotrum, one of my 3 x great grandfathers was born cir 1789 in Morris County, New Jersey. Died before 1871, Ontario, Canada.

He married Mary Baker Smith March 18, 1812 in Upper Canada.

According to the Upper Canada Land Petition of David Hotrum, the Hotrum family was in Upper Canada by 1793.  The petition provides his birth year and that he was born in Morris County, New Jersey.

In considering David's father Conrad, his Land Petition gives his surname as Hotterham.
A later petition of David Kern tells us that Conrad died before Dec. 2, 1802.

The Hotrum family probably traveled overland by wagon in New Jersey, to the Hudson River, and then New York, where they took shipping on a boat up the Hudson River to Albany. They probably went overland from Albany by wagon to Schenectady, where they would have taken shipping on a boat along the Mohawk River. They would have proceeded by boat to the Carrying Place near Fort Stanwix, crossed along Wood Creek to Oneida Lake and then across the lake to Oswego on Lake Ontario. Here they would have hired another boat to take them to the Niagara River or further west to  Barton Township. This trip would have taken them about 6 weeks.

They received land in Barton Township, which early on became part of Hamilton in the County of Wentworth.
They also appear in various records of Glanford Township.

Arrived in New England in 1639. He is first mentioned in the colonial records January 7, 1638/9 among those proposed to take up their freedom in Yarmouth, Mass. Jury duty in Yarmouth June 17, 1641. He was able to bear arms in August 1643. June 6, 1649 a surveor of highways at Yarmouth. April 6, 1653 at Plymouth a deputy from Yarmouth considering a danger of war between England and Holland. June 9, 1653 appointed lieutenant of the military company at Yarmouth. October 3, 1654 ordered to appear before the Court to answer for affronting the constable. March 6, 1654/5 he was put out of his office and ordered to bear arms as a common soldier. June 3, 1656 he is mentioned as as surveyor of highways at Yarmouth. Oath of fidelity taken in 1657.  Jnue 3, 1657 he was on a grand jury. June 1, 1658 he was restored to his office of lieutenant. Octobe 2, 1658 he was a member of the council of war. June 1, 1663 he is mentioned as constable of Yarmouth. June 5, 1666 as surveyor of highways.

Nelson Niles Rathbun, one of 3 x great grandfathers was born June 19, 1805 in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Died July 7, 1880, Harley, Burford Twp., Brant Co., Ontario, Canada.

In 1814 came to Upper Canada with his parents. In 1831 they moved to Burford Twp. Upper Canada and bought 100A of lot 11 concession 7 near Harley, Ontario. On the 1871 Census of Burford Twp. he is listed as Independent Methodist Episcopal.

He married Mercy Ryder November 14, 1831 at Burford, Brant County, Upper Canada.

William Rathbun (m Irene Niles)
As a young man he moved to Union, Pennsylvania and purchased his claim of Jesse Losey.  He built a home before 1812.  He married there in 1799. About 1811, he sold his home to Ambrose Millard who was the husband of his niece, Mary Gordon. He was a farmer.  He returned to Saratoga County, New York.  About 1814, he moved to Canada.  He spent the last 20 years of his life in bed due to a stroke.

Deacon Daniel Rathbun (m Sarah Higby)
He served in the French and Indian War in a company commanded by his brother-in-law, Uriah Stephens, in Col. Ebenezer Marsh's Regiment. Daniel move in the early 1760s to Berkshire Co., Mass., where he operated one of the first fulling mills in Great Barrington, Mass. He was moderator of the town meeting there in March 1766. He later lived in nearby Richmond. He was deacon in the Baptist Church and was occassionally called upon to preach. He had a brief stay with the Shakers. After three years he left this religious sect and published an account of his disillusionment with it. About 1804, he and his wife moved to Milton, in Saratoga Co., N.Y., to live with their son Valentine.

Brant County Museum, Brantford, Ontario and Princeton, Ontario - October 2014

Last weekend we drove to southwestern Ontario to attend a wedding. Along the way, I managed to fit in a few hours of research at the Brant County Museum in Brantford, Ontario. This museum is run by the Brant County Historical Society.

My main reason for being there was, that they have recently made available for public use the older Land Registry Copy Books for Brant Count, which includes Burford Township, where many of my ancestors settled and lived.

We were able to photograph the first two concessions of the copy books for Burford from the Crown Grant to about 1900 for lots 1 to 24.  We also photographed various lots along the middle townline of Burford. That would be specifically Concession 3, 4 and 5 from lots 10 through 15.

I noticed lots of entries for my families of interest, Kipp, Link, Rathbun, Ryder, Force, and Beamer.
It will take a few days to read them and pick out the information I want.

I also found time to visit my hometown of Princeton, Ontario.
The main reason was to look at a Schultz tombstone in the local cemetery. It has been there for a number of years and had no names on the stone. Either side of the stone there are three markers. One say Mother 1873-1952, the second says Father 1867-1939, the third reads Wilfred 1903-1937.

In reality Mother and Father are Elizabeth Kipp and Charles William Schultz, my 1st cousin once removed and granduncle respectively.

At the September 2013 Schultz reunion, it was decided to add their names to the stone. This was approved at the 2014 reunion and completed. The lettering looks great and now it is easy for relatives to know who rests there.
